January assessment learner response
1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
WWW: Overall a good assessment from you Matas. Your natural ability to analyse media texts is great to see (Q1). A good attempt at Q4 starting to begin debating and validating audience theories.
EBI: For Q3 on BBC you need more specific for and against points (see indicative content on the mark scheme)
28/43 - B
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Q1 - Add more analysis ( Stab proof vest, more on font)
Q2 - The right strategy being Conglomerate ownership and not Commodification
Q3 - Add more knowledge and use more specific points ( Funding model, Remit, Regulation, Streaming services, Funding model outdated)
Q4 -Use more real world examples and apply the theories and examples to the question and directly forming an opinion to answer it
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.
7 in my preparation, I had done as much revision as I could for industry and audience but when it came to PSB and the BBC I had glossed over it a bit too lightly which ended up being my downfall. All of my blogs have been up to the date before the assessment.
4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
I did but I got one of the strategies names wrong and maybe i should have taken the safer path of after doing horizontal integration also doing vertical integration.
5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
I think that I needed to use more knowledge and specific points when it came to comparing weather or not the BBC should be a PSB or not and could have used the points in conjunction with some theories to just support my ideas for and against.
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

One reason for why I greatly agree that the media can have a damaging effect on audiences is that it creates panic. This is because during the late 90's there had been a mass shooting that is said by the media to have been influenced by the music produced by Marilyn Manson and his music. This is supported by Stephen Cohens theory on moral panic and that with the introduction of new technology or innovation like Manson's music, the media ladled the music as a threat to societal values which crated a rise in panic over his music being identified as the cause for the columbine school massacre. This clearly demonstrates that the media can cause mass hysteria over something like a musician and his music just because the media had exacerbated the factors/ reasons for the shooting while also limiting the ideas to just that of the music being the main cause which links to the idea that people are dependent on the media and will believe everything on it to be valid and true further reinforcing the idea that the media negatively influences people to behave in a frightened and accusative manner.
